Harriet Fraad, a mental health counselor and hypnotherapist, joins me to discuss feminism and class. Dr. Fraad writes articles and has a podcast on the intersection of politics, economics, and personal life. Her podcast, Capitalism Hits Home, is produced by Democracy at Work.
In this episode of Crossroads, I speak with Dr. Fraad about the history of the feminist movement, capitalism, and how identity politics have hurt attempts at a unified social justice movement. We also discuss current events such as the prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein, and the historic Bernie Sanders campaign.
During our expansive and in depth conversation, Dr. Fraad mentions Gloria Steinem’s association with the CIA and describes the money behind Steinem’s brand of feminism. If you would like to know more about Steinem’s acknowledged role as a CIA employee, here is an interview in which she says “I had for four years been a Central Intelligence agent…” This lesser known fact sheds light on the current friction between the proponents of liberal feminism and its critics. In my conversation with Dr. Fraad, she explains the origins of this divide and the lasting ramifications of the state sponsored effort to keep women and working class people from uniting and claiming their rights.
